The area around Dunfermline became home to the first settlers in the Neolithic period. Dunfermline has a number of historic buildings such as Dunfermline Abbey which is one of the best examples of Scoto-Norman monastic architecture. The Abbey was built between 1128 and 1150. Also Abbot House, it was originally built in the mid-fifteenth century making this the oldest secular building still standing in Dunfermline. Moreover, Dunfermline Carnegie library which was built between 1881–1883. The library was the first in the world to be funded by donations by philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie.
