An Amazing Dining Experience In The Sunnmøre Alps

Case Study

Orangery for Hotel Union Øye, Norway

Encircled by the ethereal beauty of Norway’s magnificent Sunnmore Alps lies the secluded but majestic Hotel Union Øye. Part of the Relais & Châteaux association of luxury hotels, the historic venue underwent a 2-year renovation and, as is befitting of the 1891 heritage property, a traditional orangery was specified to enhance the fine dining experience for guests.

The 21 x 9 metre glazed extension is a talking point in itself and allows diners the opportunity to wonder at the breathtaking beauty surrounding the hotel while enjoying a menu based on seasonality and the best of local produce.

The orangery features 12-pane glazing with arched clerestories and two sets of double doors to each side. A deep entablature ensures the orangery adheres to classical architectural proportions and the colour choices (Hampton Conservatories Leinster Green and RAL 7022 Umbra Grey) draw inspiration from the Nordic landscape.

For the comfort of guests, the orangery was specified with underfloor heating, an open fire, and thermostatically controlled roof vents to ensure the indoor environment remains comfortable and constant throughout the year.

Creating such a landmark destination during the colder winter months, was not without its challenges but the Hampton Conservatories team created a temporary, marquee-like installation over the entire building to allow the project to progress and remain on schedule.

The orangery is not only in use as the hotel’s main dining room but the extension was also designed as a venue for weddings and other events, ensuring that it is a strategic investment for owners, 62°NORD.
