Painted wooden greenhouses delight in Donacloney

Painted wooden greenhouses delight in Donacloney

Hampton has helped make a dream come true for a semi-retired couple in County Down, installing not one but two painted wooden greenhouses in their garden.

The Webbs, who live in the village of Donacloney, had long planned to spend more time outdoors, and now they can, thanks to the addition of two classically-inspired timber greenhouses that perfectly complement their home.

Owner and keen gardener Valerie Webb enthused, “They are only in the back garden but you feel like you’re a million miles away from everything.”

Multi-purpose greenhouses

The first model Valerie chose is a brick-based Causeway model, distinctive for its projecting gable pavilion. It will primarily be used for cultivation but the couple have also incorporated a small table and chairs, making it ideal for informal entertaining too. The space has further been personalised with live-edge shelving from Clarke Cunningham Sawmills and slate flooring sourced from architectural salvagers, Wilsons Yard.

The second, The Dunluce, a gable-fronted design, will be dedicated to growing fruit and vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers, which the couple plan to preserve to use for homemade sauces year-round.

“With our arts and crafts, Cotswold-style home, it was important that the greenhouses felt like a natural extension of the house and garden,” said Valerie. “From the moment we saw Hampton’s designs, the symmetry, proportion, and authenticity just felt right.

“I love gardening, cooking and baking and I really care about what goes into my food. Growing from seed is so rewarding, and with the greenhouse, the process is so much easier. The light and temperature make gardening a real joy.”

Both greenhouses are painted in Silver Fern, a soft, neutral green-grey colour that blends beautifully with the surrounding landscape.

Greenhouses built to last and to delight

While the couple were initially drawn to Hampton’s timeless Victorian styling and dedication to sustainable craftsmanship, they were curious about whether a painted timber construction would stand the test of time. Hampton was quick to reassure them.

Each greenhouse is built primarily from a durable hardwood prized for its strength and stability. Carefully selected aluminium components are included where they offer genuine performance benefits, and Hampton’s patent-pending ventilation system ensures a cleaner, drier growing environment inside.

While speaking with Valerie, Diarmuid Gavin, renowned television gardener and ambassador for Hampton Greenhouses commented, “These are not your average greenhouses. Built to last a lifetime, they’re as practical as they are beautiful. More than just glass and timber, they’re a space to connect both with nature and with yourself.”

Valerie concluded: “From concept to completion, it’s been an absolute joy to work with Hampton!”
