It’s common to see a glazed extension purposed as a kitchen or an additional living space, but this is far from its full potential, according to Hampton Conservatories. The company urges homeowners to view their bespoke orangery or conservatory as a blank canvas that can be crafted into one of a number of possibilities.
Mervyn Montgomery, joint director of Hampton Conservatories said: “Historically, homeowners may have been nervous about using their room for anything other than a kitchen, dining, or living space. This was often because they may have had concerns about both climate control and sun glare but technology has developed to such an extent that homeowners no longer need to be worried about either of these factors, as the glass and structure can be adapted to most needs and uses.”
Benefits of additional glazing in the home
Feeling close to nature promotes a range of positive emotions, and regular exposure to sunlight is linked to increased serotonin levels in the brain, producing positive impacts on mood and mental well-being. Therefore a glazed extension is the perfect way to achieve these benefits within a home, so it makes sense to purpose the structure to allow maximum enjoyment and use.
Promoting productivity
With hybrid working here to stay, using the space as a home office is sure to add long-term value to a property and be an incredible environment that aids calmness as well as enhances concentration. If home-working isn’t a requirement or for those who are more active, embrace the bright and airy ambiance and use the space as a home gym, yoga, or wellness retreat and feel like you’re working out outside, all year around.
A function of passion
If your lifestyle doesn’t befit a space for productivity, design your glazed extension with passion in mind. This could include building a space in which to create art or display artwork, or bookworms and reading enthusiasts may also consider using a new orangery or conservatory as a library or creating a smaller reading nook – a room within a room. Those with a passion for plants may prefer to use their glazed extension in a traditional sense, filling it with plants and fauna to create an indoor garden. Being close to nature incites feelings of joy and creativity, making an orangery or conservatory the ideal home for a passion project.
Entertaining spaces
Styling an entertaining space goes much further than selecting the right table, chairs, and sofas. Home entertaining now encompasses home bars and games areas. Those who like to throw a party may consider dedicated drinks cupboards, super-sized televisions, pool tables, and music/DJ areas to be must-haves, all of which can be incorporated into a glazed extension and will be better accommodated when planned in at an early stage.
Planning ahead
Although orangeries and conservatories can be designed for flexible use, if the homeowner has a specific purpose in mind, they should always share that with their designer. The designer will provide advice about which type of glazed extension is best suited to the project as well as taking into consideration the aspect of the property, and any enhancements requirements such as solar reflective glass, tinted glass, roof vents, rain sensors, heat sources and lighting.
Mervyn Montgomery continued: “The addition of a glazed extension, such as an orangery or conservatory is not only a way to add value to a property but functionality as well. Both orangeries and conservatories boast different features that may be better suited or adapted for the desired use of the new room, so always discuss functionality with an expert before committing to a particular extension type .”
