The lost appeal of the timber greenhouse

Timber was once the preferred material for greenhouse construction, with original Victorian designs built from old-growth Pitch Pine, a stable wood with natural resins that act as a biological shield against decay. As technology advanced and priorities shifted, modern plantations began producing fast-growing timber with high sugar content, prone to rapid seasonal swelling and decay. Even species considered premium alternatives, like untreated Western Red Cedar, frequently disappoint, absorbing moisture and developing unsightly patchy black staining.

Modern botanical architecture revitalises the timber greenhouse

A stickler for the allure of traditional timber, our luxury greenhouse range utilises Fraké, an exceptionally beautiful African hardwood with a rich grain reflective of walnut. Our process rejects the chemical treatments most modern timbers undergo, instead subjecting our wood to a precision-controlled heat-and-steam pyrolysis process between 180°C and 212°C. By permanently altering the timber at a molecular level, the natural sugars that fuel rotting are removed.

The result is a Class 1 Durability hardwood, tested to last over 25 years untreated and reducing moisture-related movement by up to 90%. Our timber structures match the dimensional stability of high-performance aluminium, while retaining the undeniable warmth of a living, organic structure. These are traditional greenhouses built not just for the present, but as a permanent legacy for the discerning homeowner and horticulturist.

Designing out condensation concerns

Establishing a new benchmark in timber greenhouse design, we have engineered out the primary failure point of historic botanical structures: trapped moisture. Traditional glazing systems often experience condensation pooling between the glass and the frame, inevitably resulting in timber staining and structural degradation. Our revolutionary ventilated glazing system solves this problem, using a bespoke clip design to hold each glass pane clear of the timber rebate, which creates a discreet air gap that allows internal condensation to migrate down the glass and escape the structure.

To further enhance the architectural protection, our timber greenhouses feature no horizontal flat surfaces in their design, ensuring that water cannot stand on any internal or external profile; it can only flow. Externally, our powder-coated aluminium beads snap perfectly into place, flawlessly replicating the elegant, traditional putty-fronted silhouette of a period Victorian greenhouse, while providing protection where the building interacts most aggressively with the elements.

Timeless in aesthetic, durability, and conscience

A traditional aluminium greenhouse demands a staggering 15-tonnes of carbon for every tonne produced. Comparably, Hampton greenhouses are crafted from responsibly sourced timber with full FSC Chain of Custody certification. Unlike aluminium, timber continues to store carbon throughout its lifetime, while the forests from which it is responsibly sourced continue to absorb CO₂ and release the oxygen we all depend on.

An investment of this value should be protected as such, so we developed Hampton ToughCoat™, a water-based, two-part, chemically bonded UV-stable coating. Combined with an advanced primer that fuses into the heat-treated hardwood fibres at a molecular level, the layers bond into a single, highly elastic and scratch-resistant ‘skin’ that moves naturally with the timber. This sophisticated engineering achieves an unprecedented 10-15-year maintenance cycle, proving the Hampton greenhouse to possess both the structural stability of a machine and the timeless, enduring soul of the forest.
